The world can’t miss out these masterpieces.
Kdramas are much more than what most people label them to be — Cheesy Romantic Comedies. Well, it’s not their fault as everyone in the beginning, directly jump into the fantasy world of romantic comedies that they get stuck there forever losing the chance to find out the best genre of kdramas — Slice of Life. For so long, I had been watching the ordinary rom-coms too, the rich guy poor girl ones and now when I look back, I realize that I have wasted quite a lot of my precious time on that. Thanks to one of my closest friends who made me watch Reply 1988, removing the blindfold. Since then, my standards for Korean Dramas reached the pinnacle and soon, I discovered some of the masterpieces hidden deep inside the world of kdramas and they eventually taught me what life actually is.
#1 Reply 1988
Set in the late 80s, this show revolves around the life of five families living in the Ssangmundong neighborhood in Seoul. The main focus is on the five teenage childhood friends, how they face the difficulties of finding love, finding the purpose of life and thus, finding themselves in the process. What I liked the most about this show is the relatability factor, I could feel myself in the shoes of those teens and felt like I was watching my own family on screen whenever they showed the adults. It’s a must watch for all age groups, for everyone who wants to understand LIFE better.
Here’s my most favorite quote from this drama.
"No matter how better others’ things may seem, they all have their faults."
#2 My Mister
A few days after watching this masterpiece I got to know that the Brazilian Writer, Paulo Coelho who is infamous for his book, “The Alchemist” has praised this drama calling it a “flawless depiction of the human condition” and I just can’t agree more with him. This show is about a man in his 40s who’s facing endless problems in both his job and personal life and a young woman in her 20s who has already given up on her life and lives just for the sake of living. As they cross paths, they start finding comfort in each other, thus defining ‘love’ in the most different and best way possible. I don’t think I’ll ever see a more real drama than this one, it’s more real than real life itself.
Dropping my most fav lines from this masterpiece.
"Live a happy life. That’s how you repay the people in your life.”
#3 Prison Playbook
I wasn’t checking this out from my watchlist for so long because of the title and decided to watch it one day just because it is from the same director as Reply 1988. The very first episode got me hooked and by the end, I had realised that this show is a diamond. It’s a story of hope and it gave me The Shawshank Redemption vibes then and there. Je Hyuk, the Superstar of Baseball happens to end up in prison and through him we get to know the other prisoners, their stories and gradually we get a clear idea of how the real world works, how the people inside the prison aren't all bad and the people roaming outside freely aren't all good.
Here’s my ultimate favorite line from the drama.
“Even if you live for one day, live as a good person.”
#4 Hospital Playlist
I usually pass watching Medical Dramas as it’s kind of difficult for me to grasp the minutest details but this one really amazed me. Yes, I had a hard time trying to understand the complicated medical terms but that was nothing compared to the box of happiness I was experiencing while watching this gem. It’s about the life of five doctors of the 99 batch who were friends from college. I don’t know a drama that has portrayed the variety of human emotions better than this one. One special thing about this drama is that almost equal screen time has been given to the residents, the patients and the guardians which goes a long way in achieving the relatability factor, as we somehow at some point start seeing ourselves in them.
My most favorite line (actually a book reference) from this show:
“Bad things at times do happen to good people.”
(You guys are goanna love it! I'm so excited!)
#5 Misaeng : Incomplete Life
Another masterpiece still unknown to most of the people out there. This show revolves Jang Gue Rae, a young adult who joins as an intern in a big multinational company, One International. It basically portrays the life of office going people, the countless difficulties they face and the politics lying behind all this. I learnt life the harder way through this drama. It made me realize the fact that if there’s any secret ingredient to make the best out of your life, then that is ‘living’. No matter what life throws at you, no matter how hard it gets, all you have to do is just hang in there and live, just breathe and one day you’ll get the paycheck from your life in return, for not quitting when you could have easily.
Let me share my favorite quote from this one.
“The people you meet can change your life. If you follow a fly, you will end up near a toilet. If you follow a honeybee, you will end up in a flowerbed.”
Try watching these dramas and I'm sure you'll yourself see the change in you. For me, these five were truly life changing, they taught me how the happiest things are hidden in the littlest of moments, how I should cherish the people in my life, my family who have always been there for me and how I can find joy in the things I do, the things I'm doing right now and that home is not a place, it is a feeling, it is a feeling that you get when you're around the people with whom you feel safe, where you feel happy and most importantly, where you feel yourself.
I hope you like this article and I really would be very happy if you guys decide to watch these five masterpieces in the kdrama world as they can change your life magically, trust me, I have been there too.
Happy Watching!
